ABC-Ohio was blessed to welcome Rev. Dr. Carolyn L. Gordon as our keynote speaker for the 2010 Annual Gathering in Columbus. She joined the Fuller faculty in 2007 as associate professor of communication and chairs the Department of Preaching and Communication. She came to Fuller from Central Baptist Theological Seminary, where she served for five years as associate professor of church and community; she has also taught communication and public speaking in a variety of contexts.
What happened at the 184th Annual Gathering? Here are reports that were updated hourly during the 2009 event:
October 17, 2009 - Saturday Morning Report
After an enjoyable continental breakfast, we gathered a final time as "The Remnant" as Rev. Larry Swain described the group. Rev. David Putman led our final seminar. He started by saying, "we have to get 'Jesus right' before we can advance the church." He then put this in practical terms by looking at ideas to change the way people think about church. The goal is to break down the walls and redefining the church not as an organization, but as an organism - truly recognizing that we are the body of Christ. It was a fascinating close to a wonderful week. God truly blessed us in many ways! We now look forward to the 185th Annual Gathering which will be held October 7 to 9, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza Columbus North (same as this year). Plan now to be a part!
What happened at the 183rd Annual Gathering? Here are reports that were updated hourly during the 2008 event:
October 18, 2008 - Morning Seminar Report
The Annual Gathering concluded with a final seminar in the Ballroom. Rev. Tom Lipsey of Montgomery Community Church in Cincinnati spoke asking the question: "Who do you invite to the party? Who do you invite to the banquet?" He focused on how Jesus purposely chose to include people who are not included. Rev. Lipsey said we do this by buying into the missional mindset through connecting with our communities. The session closed with an evaluation of the entire Annual Gathering conducted in a small group format. It was a wonderful weekend and we are already looking forward to what God has in store in the coming year!
The 183rd Annual Gathering of the American Baptist Churches of Ohio ended October 18. The 2008 event was hosted by the churches of the Marion Baptist Association and held in Columbus, Ohio. All activities took place at the CROWNE PLAZA Columbus North, 6500 Doubletree Avenue, Columbus 43229.
Once again, this was a wonderful opportunity for our American Baptist family here in Ohio to come together for three days of renewed friendships, family fun, worship, learning and encouragement. It was also a wonderful way to invite friends and guests to learn more about who we are as American Baptists!
The ABC/Ohio Program and Local Arrangements Teams worked on this year’s Annual Gathering for many months with great anticipation of how God would work during our three days together. Our theme this year was “Overflowing With Hope” based on Romans 15:13 which says…‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.’. Our keynote speaker this year was Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Johnson (see related story).
